The South-Wing Veranda

Last Friday was the best party of the year, and the best party I have been to in a while. The occasion? Josh Simpson's 28th birthday. Location? Balboa Bay/Newport Harbor. Theme? Preppy. His parents house is actually 3 houses down from one of the girls on MTV's Newport Harbor. I don't remember her name, but she's spoiled. If you want a good idea of what it was like, think of Wedding Crasher's when they are at the vacation house. I decided to go with the golfer/sporty look, and I think it worked well.

The horderves were on the dock and inside the house and sparkling cider in champagne glasses added a touch of class. It was fun enough just handing out, talking about stocks and the our investments, playing croquet, and doing some friendly banter here and there. The real party got started though when the words sounded, "Oh Snap!" I have a video of Josh dancing, it's pretty funny. The 2nd half of the night was mostly dancing, and those who were dancing were mostly girls.

I hope you're still reading, because I'm going to let you in on a secret of mine. I like but don't like dancing. I think its incredibly awkward at times. For instance, at my Homecoming dance my senior year, the urinal overflowed onto my pants and it looked like I wet myself (the urinal was clogged and it was obvious other people had used it before me. Ugh.). Dancing is fun in a small room with a big crowd because you don't really have to be a good dancer, just able to move with the larger crowd. But when people fan out, then you're in trouble.

I've figured out a method that works for me though. Because I'm baptist, I think it's in my genes to not have rhythm. Yet there is part of me that still can move and keep a beat, which is probably the black baptist part. I think its more powerful than the all-white southern baptist. Knowing this, I figured out how to work this to my favor. By combining my accumulated dance moves I've learned over the last 8 years with the large amount of time I spend watching music videos, I have a decent repertoire of dance moves. Unfortunately they last for about 15 seconds per session. So during the party, you could expect to see me like this:

Yes, that's me, totally pop-lock and droppin' it. And at other times, I just take pictures or watch others dance. I've realized the key to my success as a dancer is quality, not quantity (and making sure I have pictures of the 2% I dance).
